Ribbon Cutting at The Stanley Building

A joint celebration of improvements to the 7th street corridor was held Friday March 15th at the corner of 7th and  Los Angeles street. Members of the Los Angeles City Council District 14 including councilmember Kevin De Leon attended the event along with members of the local community including leaders from the Business Improvement District (BID). The event was hosted by the Hirsh Collective which owns and operates the Stanley Building at 656 S. Los Angeles Street along with four other buildings in the district.

In April 2022, the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering, in partnership with Council District 14, began a $12 million multimodal transportation project to add pedestrian and bicyclist safety improvements, including pedestrian lighting, bus islands, and trees, to Downtown LA’s 7th Street between Figueroa Street to San Pedro Street. The 7th Streetscape improvement project through the Fashion District was completed in February of this year.  Business owners like the Hirsh Collective have been actively putting some extra TLC into their buildings as a response to the city’s work – often by painting, updating and actively working to improve local neighborhood appeal.

Councilmember De Leon declared, “I want to commend the Hirsh family for revitalizing their real estate portfolio in the Fashion District here in Downtown LA, especially here at the Stanley Building.”

When the Stanley Building first opened in the 1920’s, it was known as the “Builders Exchange Building” and later the “Terminal Building’ as it was a part of the Los Angeles Greyhound Bus Terminal facilities complex from the late 1960’s until early 1990’s.  Building use has evolved from transportation to garment and textiles and more recently to creative office – all of which highlight the nearly 100 years of its positive impact on the Los Angeles economy.   In fact, the structure is named in honor of late Downtown Los Angeles philanthropist, businessman and Fashion District icon, Stanley Hirsh.

Margot Garcia, the manager of the Stanley Building noted: “We are so thankful for the efforts of the council, the BID and the city in working to keep our neighborhood safe and conducive to fashion and creative office uses.  We welcome the partnerships with our city council to further the legacy of Stanley Hirsh and others in building a thriving creative community in downtown Los Angeles, and we look forward to future generations of Angelenos embracing the vibrant community that makes up our Los Angeles Fashion District.”
